Spotlight on The Farum Family

…from Galena, Missouri, is a five-piece band that plays a lively blend of gospel, bluegrass and old-time music. They love to perform tunes that will have you tapping your foot and singing right along, or perhaps take you on a trip down memory lane. A few songs will even make you laugh out loud!

Dad (aka Norm) is the bandleader, with 30+ years of stage experience under his belt. He picks the five-string banjo and sings lead and harmony vocals. His musical credits include five seasons at Silver Dollar City, three seasons at The Roy Clark Theatre and seven years aboard the Lake Queen paddle wheeler.
Mom (her friends call her Trish) is the pianist for the group and is also featured on lead and harmony vocals. She grew up playing music in church, for recitals, school concerts and 4-H programs. In 1987 she first performed in Branson, playing the ragtime piano for the Vaudeville Show at the Shepherd of the Hills, later joining Norm on his Lake Queen cruises. They married in early 1988, and played music as a duet until just a few years ago.

In July 2003, their oldest sons began taking music lessons. It wasn’t long before they were able to do a song or two with Dad & Mom, and eventually became a full-time part of the band. Their younger sister followed suit in November of that year, and now they have all been playing over four years.
Daniel, who is now 15, is doing quite a good job on the upright bass and lead vocals. A fan of Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, and the Sons of the Pioneers, he gets requests to sing Ghost Riders, The Battle of New Orleans and many other songs.

Benjamin is 12 years old and can make his mandolin ring as he plays rhythm, melodic fills and frequently takes a lead break as well. He occasionally takes lessons from one of his favorite musicians, *Greg Bailey, who is a part of Silver Dollar City’s Homestead Pickers. *Greg also recorded and mastered their brand new Farnum Family CD called, Tomato Pickin’.

Hannah, at age ten, has been studying fiddle with *Ricky Boen since her very first lesson over four years ago. Hannah handles a good percentage of the instrumentals for the family band, playing old favorites such as Clarinet Polka, Liberty, Red Wing, Soldier’s Joy and Ashokan Farewell. She also sings some sweet gospel songs.

*Ricky is an excellent, classically-trained musician with over 25 years of teaching experience. His band, Texas Mud, performs in Branson, and he also plays fiddle with the Sons of the Pioneers.
In addition to the five musicians, eight year old Nathaniel joined the group in August of 2006, singing an occasional special number. His rendition of You’ve Got a Friend in Me is a real show-stopper! Three year old Maggie sometimes makes a surprise stage appearance, and 1½ year old Matthew is generally content to listen to the music.

Since forming their band the family has played venues in Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and many times in their home state of Missouri. In May of 2006 they were invited to play at Silver Dollar City’s Bluegrass & BBQ Festival and Southern Gospel Picnic in September. One of their recent concert performances was to a warm crowd at the Lyric Theater in Harrison, Arkansas, during the January ice storm, and they were pleased to return this past May and this October for two more SDC music festivals!

“Our goal is to glorify our Savior and be a blessing to all who hear us. We are mindful of where our talents come from and thankful that we can do something as a family to bring a smile to others.”

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
